Here is our first newsletter of 2019; a warm welcome to new clients of UNSILO reading this newsletter for the first time.

Manuscript Evaluation

The success of any software comes from understanding customer needs. So our trials, which are well underway with Clarivate Analytics, makers of the market-leading Scholar One submission tool. The trials include six major publishers, includes input from over 50 triallists, and both as part of the trial and preceding it, the UNSILO UX team have so far interviewed over 25 researchers and publishers one to one. At this year’s London Book Fair, UNSILO will be giving a presentation about the Manuscript Evaluation set of tools – join us on March 13 for a free Insights seminar. While much of the Manuscript Evaluation programme is still in early stages of development, the Journal Match tool is available now as a standalone API. Contact Neil or Michael for more details.

BMJ a new customer of UNSILO

We welcome BMJ to the UNSILO family in January. As with all our major customers, we held a workshop soon after starting work together, to communicate more about UNSILO, but most importantly, to learn more from publishers about their business processes and wishes. We can build solutions, but we will never understand the customer as much as the publisher does. Their feedback and input is vital to create successful solutions.

More about AI and machine learning

Some of the common misconceptions about AI in publishing are considered in a new article in this month’s Learned Publishing. Entitled “Mythbusting AI”, the article considers some of the statements that publishers make about this new technology. Is it a black box? Is it a magic bullet? And, equally importantly, how can we evaluate if it is a success? Usually Learned Publishing is a subscription-based journal, but throughout 2019 it offers free access to articles.

Meet UNSILO at forthcoming eventsSpring is a busy month for conferences and events. We will be co-presenting on an SSP webinar (March 19), intringuingly titled We CAN, but SHOULD We? Launching a New Product or Service (or Not). We are attending The London Book Fair (12-13 March), UKSG 2019 (8-10 April, Telford, UK), and giving a presentation at this year’s European Conference on Information Retrieval (14-18 April, Cologne).
